Image# V038 - Ear Tag Cattle Identification Programs
Ear Tag Cattle Identification Programs
As of July 1, 2002, all Canadian cattle must be ear tagged to identify the herd of origin. There are two identification systems: Canadian Cattle Identification Program for beef cattle and National Livestock Identification for Dairy (NLID). Veal are male dairy animals and are therefore tagged with the NLID tags shown in this picture. The tags have a barcode so that the tag can quickly be scanned and read. The ear tag stays with the animal from its herd of origin to the point of carcass inspection at a processing plant, and allows easy trace back when a problem occurs.
