Today, the majority of cattle in Canada are raised to a finished market weight in specialized feedlots. There are about 3,000 of these feedlots in Ontario. Feedlots are specially designed open-air or sheltered facilities. In them, cattle are able to mingle and have free access to feed and water. The feedlot system produces a consistenly uniform and high quality beef product for the consumer. Finishing rations of mostly grain and some forage are fed to cattle for approximately 100 days.
